NEW: Extreme Event Webquest

Using a variety of online resources including videos, games, and reference materials to gather information, this new activity is designed to engage and challenge students from middle school through college. Using a combination of guided research, individual tasks, and group collaboration this webquest stimulates critical thinking about how to prepare for disasters and increase resilience in communities.

2016 NAS Awards

Since 1886, the National Academy of Sciences has honored outstanding achievement in the physical, biological, and social sciences through its awards program. This year’s winners include writer, director, actor, and science communicator Alan Alda; California Institute of Technology professor Dianne K. Newman; Princeton University professor Sergio Verdú; and Stanford University Professor Carolyn Bertozzi.

Zika Virus Workshop

At the request of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a one-day public workshop on February 16, 2016 to explore potential research priorities arising as a result of the emergence of Zika virus in the United States.
