Watch My AAPI Plate video, a collaboration between the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the First Lady’s Let’s Move! Initiative, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The video features a healthy-cooking demonstration by White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford and Chef Ming Tsai, who show that preparing Asian American and Pacific Islander dishes can be both healthy and traditional.
Join the Koshland Science Museum for a culinary adventure featuring healthy and delicious meals!
This popular cook-off showcases cuisine prepared by Culinary Job Training students at the D.C. Central Kitchen. Working in teams, students will makeover global recipes to ensure that takes on old favorites reflect the MyPlate icon. The challenge is to come as close as possible to creating a healthy and balanced meal, while also focusing on taste and presentation. All teams will receive recognition for participating in this learning opportunity.
Cook-off judges include:
- Cristeta "Cris" Comerford, Executive Chef, White House
- Chef Rahman “Rock” Harper, television personality, restaurateur, and Director of Kitchen Operations at the D.C. Central Kitchen
- Rob Post, Ph.D., Associate Executive Director, USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion
- Staff from the Institute of Medicine’s Food and Nutrition Board
Program participants will have the opportunity to sample dishes and visit the "Food For Thought" exhibition.
Prior to the cook-off, teams will meet with the Food and Nutrition Board to prepare for the challenge and further develop skills for a lifetime of healthy cooking.
